Founded 1983

The Hearing Loss Association of America Westchester Chapter (HLAA Westchester) was originally founded as the Westchester Chapter of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH) in February 1983 by Edith Renate Shapiro, a Holocaust survivor, chemist, and lifelong advocate for justice. Serving as the founding chapter president, Edith established the group to provide support, education, and advocacy for individuals with hearing loss in the Westchester and Rockland County area.

Over the years, HLAA Westchester has grown to nearly 100 members from Westchester and Rockland counties, Long Island, Connecticut, New York City, New Jersey, and beyond. The chapter offers monthly meetings, educational programs, and social events to help members cope with hearing loss and stay informed about the latest resources and technologies.

HLAA Westchester is governed by a volunteer board of directors and operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The chapter is affiliated with the national Hearing Loss Association of America, founded in 1979, which works to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss through education, information, support, and advocacy.
